Boston Mounted Police
The chestnut gelding
with fire in his eyes
rolled back so only the whites stand out
twists and turns his head
to look at me as I snap his photo.
The Boston policeman sitting astride
in shining black leather boots laced tightly up his calf—
calf and thigh muscles bulging, gripping the flanks of his mount—
writes out a ticket for
six college boys standing beside their pedicabs
on the wrong side of Dartmouth Street
across from the Boston Public Library.
